The Big Red flag is also called “Citadel Cadets’ Spirit Flag.”  Federal troops fired on Fort Sumter on the 9th of January 1861, beginning the American Civil War. Citadel Cadets responded and   defended Charleston Harbor. The flag under which they rallied was a red flag with a white palmetto tree and crescent moon. Today, Citadel cadets and graduates honor their strong history by carrying Big Red as their Spirit Flag.
