The Nevada state flag is a very simple design created by Louis Shellback in 1926 who won a $25 prize for the winning flag design. The canton design has two sagebrush stems crossing at the bottom forming a semi-circle around a silver star. “Nevada” appears below the star, and a yellow scroll bearing “Battle Born” is above it. “Battle Born” refers to the fact that Nevada was the only state to achieve statehood during the Civil War.

The New Hampshire state flag consists of the state seal on a blue field. The state seal contains the Revolutionary warship Raleigh flying a historically accurate thirteen star U.S. flag in front of a brilliant yellow rising sun. The ship is on land in stocks, at the shipping building yard at Portsmouth. The year “1776,” appears below the Raleigh because it’s the year of the state’s independence, and alternating stars and laurel leave sprigs encircle the seal.

The New Mexico state flag was designed by archaeologist Dr. Harry Mera in response to a flag contest sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1923. It is a simple design of the Zia Indian’s sun symbol in red on a yellow field. The Zia sun symbol reflects the Zia philosophy of the basic harmony of the universe; all centering on the sacred number four. Four represents many things including the four seasons, the four directions of the Earth, and the four stages of life (childhood, youth, adulthood and old age).

The North Carolina state flag was revised in 1885 when the background became a blue vertical stripe at the hoist, and two horizontal stripes, red over white. In the blue stripe a white star separates the letters N and C. Two scrolls with dates appear over and under the letters NC. The scroll above contains the date ” May 20, 1775″ signifying the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence. Local folklore states that the residents of Mecklenburg County were the first in the country to proclaim their independence from England. The date below is that of the Halifax Resolves, April 12, 1776. The Halifax Resolves stated that the colony leaders would meet to establish independence and to organize themselves into a nation.
